Procrastination - A Common Urge
Why is it so tempting to procrastinate? Nobody is exempted from this - it is a continuous struggle for people. If one can only be consistent in defeating procrastination - he will continually have enough time completing his tasks and reaching his set goals.
Below are some reasons why people procrastinate. With these, you will at least understand why such behaviors come to be.
? Lack of knowledge or skill.
Some people will delay doing something they don't know how to go about proceeding. Without sufficient knowledge to do a task right, individuals will naturally postpone doing it until he feels he is ready to do so.
Not having able to build the skill levels to make an acceptable job, one will usually not proceed carrying out a task that he knows he can't do well as of the moment.
? Perfectionism.
Having too high standards will lead you well towards a perfect work. But most often than not, such drive is unrealistic. It will also consume lots of time for you.
You continually do your work over and over - until you consider it to be within your standards. Perfectionism will also cost you time since you will usually put off doing something you may not have the perfect idea yet.
? Lack of commitment.
Without solid commitment to the things you have to do, there is no way you will be able to start on time - and finish your tasks on time for that matter. Lacking in commitment, you will have a hard time starting on with your work.
Commitment relates to your personal discipline. Procrastination will thrive on individuals who doesn't have the discipline to work on things just because he doesn't feel like doing so.
? Fear of failure.
Not having the courage to start working on what needs to be done will cause one to procrastinate. He will postpone things so that he will not have to give in to failure at an earlier time than necessary.
This will just prolong his agony however - and with such a negative attitude, he is also most likely destined to fail. Fear can be overwhelming - and if one is unable to control it well, he may just procrastinate just so he can save face for some time.
But we all know how this case ends - unable to accomplish the tasks on time and the corresponding low self-esteem resulting from the failure.
? Lack of passion.
Without the interest to do the tasks at hand and follow through until completion will become a problem for you. Not having the passion to work hard - or even to start working on the activities that need doing will be causes for you to procrastinate and do other things you consider to be more meaningful or fun.
Without that burning desire deep inside of you, it will indeed be hard to work on things and see it through completion. Not able to find meaning to the task at hand, will be a reason for one to procrastinate.
Tips to Defeat Procrastination - Now!
? Find time to learn - gain knowledge and skill.
What better way to address your lack of know-how than by learning about the stuff you are working on. You will need to do some research on your own to be able to cope up with your work at hand.
Good if you can consult someone or ask for an expert advice - yet this may not be usually your luxury. Most of the time, you will have to make do with the resources you have. Thus, your efforts to learn on your own will be key towards being knowledgeable and skillful.
After which, having gained the necessary knowledge and skill - you will no longer have the reason to procrastinate. You are now ready to take on the tasks at hand. You will be confident enough as you know you are now capable in carrying out the tasks to their completion - and producing quality work that is.
? Being realistic about your standards.
One doesn't need to produce a perfect work - in fact, an acceptable work is enough.
Too many times, perfectionists are caught up in a bind that they create for themselves. They are caught in the flow of inaction - and seemingly unable to complete a task until it conforms to the high standards they impose upon themselves.
A good work or sufficient job will be all that is necessary for one to consider it a completed task. Being a perfectionist will only lead you towards the road of dreams - where perfection can only become possible.
Be contented with a good quality work - it doesn't have to be perfect, it only has to be good enough. Yes, it may be nice to aim for perfection - but it is something beyond human capacity.
Learn to know your limits and settle for a near perfect work if you have to. But don't let perfectionism become a hindrance towards completing your tasks on time. Perfection is good if you are in dreamland - but in the real world, good work is really good enough.
? Possessing Discipline.
Without the commitment to work hard on your tasks, you are doomed for failure. You will not be able to endure and follow thru your work until its completion. You will take it lightly, as if it does not carry that enough weight to be considered important.
Having the discipline to work on things that are necessary to complete your tasks will help you defeat procrastination. Your self-imposed discipline will push you towards completing work you are obliged to do.
Your self-discipline will not allow procrastination to get the better of you. It will drive you towards working on important things right away - and it will not let you sit on your laurels - or take it easy for that matter.
? Be motivated.
Create a set-up where you reward yourself for completing tasks and meeting deadlines. Knowing what motivates you will be key towards coming up with the rewards you will give yourself.
To make it more challenging, you may also want to set penalties if you are not doing things as per plan. This will surely provoke you to stick to your schedule and work hard to avoid the penalty.
Continually motivate yourself and find creative ways to reward yourself. This will make it more exciting for you as each task gets completed. With each success you get, you will also gain more confidence & courage to take on more difficult tasks.
? Attitude determines altitude.
With the right attitude, you will not have problems working on tasks that need your attention. You will be confident enough to take on any activity for the completion of tasks. You will make every effort towards making things happen for the purpose of producing good work and meeting deadlines.
Having the passion and the drive to accomplish your goals will help you avoid procrastination. With a strong passion on what you are doing, you will easily do your work without much hesitation.
As they say, attitude determines altitude. Your attitude will determine how high you can go. The levels of success are dependent on your attitude towards what you do. The more inspired you are to do the best job you can, the more successful you are destined to be.
Never lose that winning attitude. This will be you the edge over all others - as you will become a higher breed above the rest. Your winning attitude will leave no place for procrastination to stay. You will be convinced yourself that inaction will not lead you to the success that you want to achieve.
Establishing Small Wins - Milestones to Celebrate
Just to get things going - and prevent procrastination from settling in - one could divide the tasks into stages so that milestones can be set.
In doing so, one will feel a certain fulfillment as each milestone is reached. One will then be motivated to work on the next stage - and having that urge to finish the task fast so that it can then be another score for him.
With small wins, the momentum will then be to your side. You are drawn towards hitting one milestone after another - and with a higher level of confidence on each milestone reached - overcoming the next obstacle will be a lot easier.
One should take time to celebrate the small wins he has achieved for himself. This will ensure a continuous high level of motivation to consistently work hard and smart towards the accomplishment of his goals.
Dealing With Procrastination Fast
Accept that you have a time management problem - that you procrastinate.
Know the causes of this behavior - and address it strategically. You should work towards crushing procrastination from your system. There is no better time to do it but now. You shouldn't wait a little longer, because by then - a lot of time would have already been wasted.
Again, there is no better way to deal with the habit of procrastination than by addressing it as quickly as possible. The problem of procrastination is an issue of inaction. You can best solve it with action - and by pounding on it day in & day out.
Thus, even small steps towards a goal will be all it takes to keep the ball rolling. Small steps will eventually lead to bigger ones - one only has to start with the former to serve as an ignition switch, then you will be ready to go.
It is also important that you do visualization. This entails picturing yourself doing your work and completing it. It is about building your confidence and projecting the right attitude & the energies necessary to the completion of the tasks on your list. Being able to picture yourself completing the tasks successfully will be a good psychological advantage for you.
Defeating procrastination may be difficult - and many will continue to struggle with it. At times one will succumb to it, but for the most part one should be able to overcome it. One should learn from the damages procrastination has brought in the past - and such should not be allowed to happen again. Starting today, you should have no more time to procrastinate.
